Dr Barnaby Wright

Deputy Head of the Courtauld Gallery and the Daniel Katz Curator of 20thÌýCentury Art

Dr Barnaby Wright is a specialist in late nineteenth-century and twentieth-century art with a particular interest in modern British art. He studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art (BA, MA, Ph.D., 1996-2004) and began his curatorial career in 2005 as Exhibitions Curator at the Hermitage Rooms in Somerset House, London, where he staged a number of exhibitions in collaboration with The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. He became a curator at the Courtauld Gallery in 2007 and has curated and co-curated a series of exhibitions including: Walter Sickert: The Camden Town NudesÌý(2007-08);ÌýFrank Auerbach: London Building Sites 1952-62Ìý(2009-10);ÌýCezanne’s Card PlayersÌý(2010-11, second venue The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York);ÌýMondrian-Nicholson: In ParallelÌý(2012);ÌýBecoming Picasso: Paris 1901Ìý(2013);ÌýEgon Schiele: The Radical NudeÌý(2014-15);ÌýSoutine’s Portraits: Cooks, Waiters and BellboysÌý(2017-18). He has also curated and co-curated a number of shows with contemporary artists at the Courtauld:ÌýRichard Serra: Drawings for the CourtauldÌý(2013);ÌýJasper Johns: RegretsÌý(2014);ÌýBridget Riley: Learning from SeuratÌý(2015);ÌýPeter DoigÌý(2023); andÌýClaudette Johnson: PresenceÌý(2023); andÌýThe Frank Auerbach: Charcoal HeadsÌý(2024).
