The 2019 Frank Davis Memorial Series invited four听distinguished speakers to share new research in African art before the continent-wide听colonialisation听of the nineteenth century. Looking at the African material on its own terms rather than in light of Europe while also allowing us to understand the intercontinental and听wider听networks: the ways in which its various kingdoms听centred听themselves and connected with cultural worlds beyond.听These lectures vary in scope and in their methodological approaches and provide an opportunity for reevaluations of the history of African arts.
