The 2019 Frank Davis Memorial Series invited four聽distinguished speakers to share new research in African art before the continent-wide聽colonialisation聽of the nineteenth century. Looking at the African material on its own terms rather than in light of Europe while also allowing us to understand the intercontinental and聽wider聽networks: the ways in which its various kingdoms聽centred聽themselves and connected with cultural worlds beyond.聽These lectures vary in scope and in their methodological approaches and provide an opportunity for reevaluations of the history of African arts.
