A Stitched Line

Kingsdale Foundation School, Year 9

Fabric dyes, recycled materials and embroidery thread on cotton.

Our textile pieces respond to Vincent van Gogh鈥檚 Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Rachel Jones鈥檚 large-scale canvas lick your teeth, they so clutch (2021). The embroidered threads along the background mimic Van Gogh鈥檚 expressive brushstrokes, adding movement, depth and emotional tension to the flat surface. The use of vibrant colour and tactile texture nods to Jones鈥檚 technique of layering and distorting form to explore the complexities of inner experience. We used hand and machine embroidery to work into our artworks and added quotes from Van Gogh鈥檚 letters to his brother Theo.
