After Vienna, 1683: A Portuguese Prophet of Ottoman Doom

Speaker: Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam (Distinguished Professor of History and Irving & Jean Stone Chair in Social Sciences, UCLA)

The failed Ottoman siege of Vienna between July and September 1683 was an important military and cultural event, that left a mark on many contemporaries. This lecture focuses on a little-known aspect of the matter, namely its reception in Portugal, especially in the milieu of the so-called 鈥Sebastianists鈥. But it also poses the problem as a far larger one of 迟丑别听use听of 鈥渃onnected histories鈥 as a method of analysis.听

Professor Sanjay Subrahmanyam was educated in Delhi and has taught in Delhi, Paris, Oxford and Los Angeles. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is also a laureate of the Dan David Prize (2019). He has authored听a large number of听books, including听Empires between Islam and Christianity听(2018).

Organised by Professor Sussan Babaie (The Courtauld) and Dr Scott Nethersole (The Courtauld).听
